Background [edit]
Traditionally, registered mail service was a manual procedure which gave rise to a dandy variety of distinctive postal markings, similar handstamps, and usage of registration labels.[i] Many countries accept issued special postal stationery and stamp stamps for registered mail. Before like services were known as Money Letters. Today, however, the registration process is largely computerized with barcode registration labels replacing the traditional analog labels having simply a printed serial number.
Generally, the item is pre-paid with the normal postage rate and an boosted accuse known every bit a registration fee. Upon payment of this fee the sender is given a receipt, and (normally) a unique numbered registration characterization is affixed to the alphabetic character. As the letter travels from mail service office to mail function and through any sorting office, it has to be signed for on a ledger. This procedure is completed when the letter is delivered and the receiver signs for the item. With computerization and barcode technology, much of the logging once done manually has become simpler and leads to greater options for the sender and receiver alike to access the status of their shipment via the internet. Many postal authorities provide tracing information for registered items on their website.
Internationally, the use of registered post requires labels with a 13-digit reference number and respective barcode (UPU S10). The first two letters indicate registration (normally "RR") while the last 2 messages normally represent the state where the registered item was posted. E.1000., RR913282511SG indicating Singapore, RB5584847749CN indicating China or RR123456785KR indicating South korea.[two]
History [edit]
The primeval reference to a mail registration system dates to July 1556, during the reign of Mary Tudor, of England. In that case, the poste betwixt this and the Northe should eche of them keepe a booke and entrye of every alphabetic character that he shall receive, the tyme of the deliverie thereof unto his hands with the parties names that shall bring it unto him, whose handes he shall likewise take to his booke, witnessing the same note to be trewe. [3] This was likely for state security rather than mail security.[4] In 1603, some other Order of Council was made whereby all letters had to be recorded.[3] This system was, in event, a registration arrangement, although it applied to all items sent via the post.
William Dockwra's 1680s London Penny Post also recorded all details on letters accustomed for onward transmission,[3] but unlike the General Postal service Office, gave compensation for losses.
The registration of messages as known today was introduced in 1841 in Peachy United kingdom of great britain and northern ireland. The letter had to be enclosed within a large sail of green newspaper. The green canvass was addressed to the Post Office where the recipient lived. The dark-green sheet was so used as a receipt and was returned to the role of origin afterwards delivery. On 1 July 1858 the light-green canvas was replaced by a green silk ribbon and soon after by a green linen tape. In 1870 the tape was replaced by green cord. On the introduction of postal stationery registration envelopes in 1878 the string was replaced by printed blue crossed lines. The bluish crossed lines take survived on registered letters to the present twenty-four hours.[5]

United States [edit]
The United states of america Mail service offers 2 distinct services called certified mail and registered post.
Certified postal service [edit]
Certified mail allows the sender proof of mailing via a mailing receipt and, upon request, electronic verification that an article was delivered or that a commitment attempt was fabricated.[fifteen] Some in-transit tracking and delivery confirmation information may be provided, but there is no formal chain of custody. Certified mail is restricted to Priority Mail and First Form Mail[16] parcels and letters mailed within the United States and its territories (including APOs and FPOs).[17] Each piece of certified postal service is assigned a unique characterization number which serves as an official record of mailing of the item by the Postal Service.
U.S. certified mail began in 1955 afterward the idea was originated past Assistant U.S. Postmaster Full general Joseph Cooper.[xviii] Certified mail may be selected for many reasons, not just for important business organisation mailings. It is used past anyone who needs or wishes to provide a tracking number to the receiver as proof of commitment. It tin can likewise substitute, essentially, a proof of mailing form when a Postmark and/or scanned receipt is obtained at a Post Part. Contrary to popular belief, Certified Mail tracking is not accepted as proof of mailing in almost all legal situations. The service as well allows the receiver to runway their bundle/envelope through the online system at usps.com using the unique tracking number provided by the mailer.[19]
Certified Mail service tin can be combined with (for an additional fee) or without "render receipt requested" service, often called "RRR." Standard return receipt requires use of PS Class 3811, which is a green postcard-sized newspaper: upon delivery, this paper is mailed dorsum to the sender and serves equally legal proof of delivery. USPS now offers Return Receipt Electronic (RRE) as an alternative to the traditional mailing back of the PS Form 3811 carte. RRE provides electronic proof of delivery data. Many jurisdictions accept this as legal proof of delivery, but a minority practice non. With RRE, when the letter reaches its final delivery destination, the letter carrier captures the signature, name and (portion of) address of the person that accepts the letter. The information is electronically stored, making it available to the sender in about real-fourth dimension via an e-mail with attached PDF. As indicated on the return receipt card, either the addressee or the leaseholder's "amanuensis" may sign for the document. Considering the procedure is automated and does not require postage, RRE is cheaper than traditional RRR.[nineteen]
